March 1: The Second Verse
Now that the month of love, February, is past, it is time for the second verse of the lovely poem Fate by Susan Marr Spalding, to appear. The first verse can be read in the February 6, 2006 post titled Found: A Love Song for February.
And two shall walk some narrow way of life
So nearly side by side, that should one turn
Ever so little space to left or right
They needs must stand acknowledged face to face.
And yet with wistful eyes that never meet,
With groping hands that never clasp, and lips
Calling in vain to ears that never hear,
They seek each other all their weary days
And die unsatisfied--and this is Fate.

As sad as verse two seems, when read in context (that is, immediately after verse one), it proves how very precious Love Found is because it might so easily have been Love Missed.
As I told you when I first sent the poem in February, it is especially dear to my husband and me because he carried it for 20 years in his wallet, hoping to find what it described. The day he proposed to me, he began by producing the aging scrap of stationary on which he had copied the first verse---a prelude to the proposal. Three months later, he had two lines from it engraved on a silver pendant which he gave me for Christmas. That was seven years ago and I'm still wearing it---grateful that we didn't miss a once in a lifetime love.
Thank you for printing the poem. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

For those of you who might wonder why I didn't include this second verse in the February post - it was because I wanted to express Love Found in particular, and leave the sad Love Missed for another time. It is a beautiful poem - both verses!
Thank you, Sharon.

I couldn't agree more. The poem reminds me of someone special. I'm glad you shared it in the way you did.
