The Supreme Bolero: Goodbye, Michelle
There are those of us who believe figure skating is a perfect form of dance, and that Michelle Kwan represents the art at its peak of glory. We have watched her from her entry into the sport at twelve years old and have hoped to see her win the Gold at the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy, at age twenty-five. We grieve at her withdrawal from competition because of injury.
We have enjoyed thirteen years of her performances, and it is supposed each of us has a favorite. Which one is yours? Difficult to choose just one, and, having chosen one, have second thoughts and third thoughts - there are so many wonderful moments.
Mine is one appropriate to Valentine's Day - the long program danced to Ravel's Bolero. Her performance expressed the passion that accompanies love, an almost unbearable joy and radiance.
Thank you, Michelle. Your art lives forever in memory.

It will be interesting to see if any of the younger American women skaters will "shine" this year -- how cruel that relatively young atheletes are often "over the hill."
Very nice post!

So did you watch the ice skating this year without Michelle in it?
Who was your favorite? Which performance did you enjoy the most?

Thanks for your comments, Carrie and tah. My favorite part of the Olympics has always been the figure skating competitions, and I'm pleased to note the National Figure Skating competitions will begin in March. The best of the skaters are those who are able to combine artistic moves with athleticism and become one with the music, in addition. Michelle Kwan exhibited all three. Sasha Cohen comes close but there is always tension watching her and being torn between admiring her presentation and expecting her to fall. Belbin and Agosto, the American ice dancers are always a pleasure to see. The performance I enjoyed the most? Our silver medal American ice dancers! Of the male skaters I most enjoy Johnny Weir when he is at the top of his form. Evgeny Pluscenko is a favorite, especially when he has a violinist with a stradivarious accompany his performance in the skating gala the night after the competitions end. It's been a grand two weeks of figure skating!

Rather than attempt to correct a misspelling of the word "Stadivarius" by deleting the above comment and rewriting it, I'm taking the shortcut.....sorry about the error.
